2015 SFG – How to Build a Trellis to aid vertical gardening – Square Foot Garden

Welcome to Humbleville !!  In this video we will show you how to build your own trellis for your Square Foot Garden (SFG).  Going vertical can help you grow more food in less space, and that’s one of the objectives of this gardening method.  Make your trellis using two pieces of rebar, 3 sections of electrical conduit, 2 90 degree connectors and some nylon trellis netting.  Train up your vining peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, watermelons and other vining vegetables.  It’s relatively inexpensive, durable, stable and easy.  If you have any comments or questions, please do so in the comment section.  Thank you and God Bless !!!

Isaiah 61:11

For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up, So the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise To spring up before all the nations.

SFG Square Foot Garden 2015 06 After – Bolting spinach, Raspberries, Washing Greens

Welcome to Humbleville !!  In this video we will give you an update on the progress of our six 4×4 SFG raised bed gardens from last June 2015.  We just got back from a week’s vacation in Texas.  How did our garden beds hold up?  Have a visit to Humbleville to find out.  In this update we can see that “Muchie” has been back and enjoying the Swiss Chard this time.  Also see what bolting spinach looks like.  We have ripening raspberries that my twins seem to enjoy along with pretty large amount of snap peas.  The green beans are starting to come in nicely.  But our cilantro is going to seed which could provide us some decent coriander seeds, although we would rather have fist fulls of cilantro.  The dill is coming in nicely as is several varieties of lettuce.  I’ll show you how I do a quick wash on the greens to get the dirt and dust off of the leaves in addition to helping them crisp up and rehydrate a bit.  Please continue to join us on our journey by SUBSCRIBING to this channel.  It really helps.  Thank you and God Bless !!

1 Corinthians 3:6

I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.

Getting a late start on an early jump on spring

On of our new additions to our gardening projects is this relatively inexpensive 15′ greenhouse.  This will be our first experience with using a greenhouse to try to extend our growing season.  The assembly of the frame wasn’t too difficult, especially when I had Cassie’s help.  Now the next trick will be to slip the greenhouse fabric over the frame, and then secure it all down so the wind won’t topple it.  I may also reorient the directional placing of this small greenhouse.  I can’t wait to get a jump on the tomatoes and peppers this season.  Better late than never.

SFG Square Foot Garden 2015 06 – Animal invasion, eating greens, training peas

Welcome to Humbleville !! We continue to share with you the steps and progress we made in the 2015 growing season.  In this video we will give you an update on the progress of our six 4×4 SFG raised bed gardens. The grape tomato plant has nearly a dozen early green tomatoes. See how we responded with mosquito netting to combat “Munchie” the unidentified animal who seems to like our kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage and broccoli. We have been eating quite a bit of spinach, arugula and lettuce along with some nice looking radishes. We are looking to leave on a week’s vacation and this is our pre-trip documentation. Will our square foot garden survive? Will my girls eat spinach? How do we train up our peas? Have a visit to Humbleville to find out. We are so excited that the 2016 growing season is just around the corner (it’s actually NOW if you are taking advantage of greenhouses, hoop houses or using other microclimate strategies).  Please continue to join us on our journey by SUBSCRIBING to this channel. Genesis 9:3

“Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.”

SFG Square Foot Garden 2015 05 – grape tomato, cold damage, spinach mistake

Welcome to Humbleville !! In this video we will give you an update on the progress of our six 4×4 SFG raised bed garden. We have the start of a grape tomato growing! Find out how I messed up while weeding too early in the spinach squares. See how easy weeding is … so easy even my kids will do it! We had a cold snap in Michigan. Hear how I covered the beds with a tarp on the coldest of nights in May, and witness what I believe to be cold damage to the bean and tomato plant leaves. How did I mess up my experiment of planting strawberry roots? Please continue to join us on our journey by SUBSCRIBING to this channel. It really helps. Thank you and God Bless !!

Genesis 1:11-12
Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them”; and it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

CANNING: Meat Storage — Taste Test — 2 Month Old Chicken Legs

Welcome back to Humbleville! There are a bunch of good Youtube videos on how to can meat, so I won’t get too much into that today. But what I have found lacking are taste testing videos. The ones I have seen are taste tests right after the canning process. But what does it taste like after it has been sitting on the shelf at room temperature for a period of time? Well, it just so happens that I have canned chicken legs and thighs two months ago, and I’m in the mood for some tasty chicken. Please join me on this Humbleville adventure as we taste test two month old chicken. Please share this video with your friends, and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to the Humbleville channel to see if I survive the taste test long enough to produce additional videos. God Bless!

UPDATE:  We broke open a jar of chicken thighs at the one year mark to make chicken salad sandwiches and they were delicious!!  Our Chloe tasted the warmed chicken before I mixed it up and she asked “Daddy, did you put butter on this chicken?  It’s awesome!”.  A little mayo, some chopped celery, a few dollops of pickle relish and some shredded mild cheddar served on lightly toasted bread made a great lunch.  I wish I had my garden fresh lettuce to serve on it as well.

Those who work their land will have abundant food but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.

SFG Square Foot Garden 2105 – Early May update, transplanting, peat pods, hand watering

Welcome to Humbleville !!  In this video we will show you how to transplant into your planting squares with the Square Foot Gardening (SFG) method.  Additionally we will see how to hand water your plants using sun warmed water, we’ll check in and see how things have progressed over the first few weeks of the gardening season in southeastern Michigan, and take a peek at a small critter hole that appeared in the garden.  Did the kale plant make it from the first video?  Have a look and find out.  See the growth of the directly sown lettuces, arugula, kale, peas, radishes, etc.  Would I start beans early by sowing them indoors ever again?  Please continue to join us on our journey by SUBSCRIBING to this channel.  It really helps.  Thank you and God Bless !!

Genesis 1:29-30

Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so.

Aquaponics: Early results with green onions

Here we are seeing what happens to “waste” green onion ends when you stick them in dirt and in our newly established aquapoinic grow bed.  These green onions were placed approximately one and a half weeks ago.  The green onion in the top photo was placed in good soil and kept watered, but did NOT have the blue LED grow light directed at it.  To contrast, the several green onions in the lower picture was placed about three days AFTER the one in the soil, but had the advantage of 16 hours of daily light from the blue spectrum LED grow spotlight and automatic watering via the aquaponic “fill and flush” grow bed system.12823447_1281835151846145_1724927156653164407_o

Can you spot the difference?  Of course you can.  I’m very encouraged by what we are seeing happening in Humbleville, USA.
